2 Natural Ways To Thicken Your Hair: Part One

It’s turning out to be a beautiful hot summer:

If your strands need a helping hand to complete the look, look no further!

Here’s a quick guide to the best natural hair thickeners around.

Natural Ingredients Can Thicken Your Hair

These uninterrupted stretches of sunkissed, balmy weather are threatening to change the definition of the British summer. And with the beaming sunshine and sultry breeze, the last thing you want to do is keep your hair hermetically sealed away in a taut bun.

If your tresses are on the thin side, though, you might be a little iffy about wearing them loose. Luckily, nature has come up with some natural body-boosting ingredients to give limp locks a lift all around. Not only do they thicken your hair, they also do double duty, bringing a range of other unique benefits to your mane.

So here’s how to ensure hair that’s as full and bouncy as can be, taking advantage of the best natural ingredients to thicken your hair.

Natural Hair Thickener: Guar Gum

Naturally derived from the guar bean, this stuff is ground into a fine white powder which is mixed with water to form a jelly-like substance, used for everything from paper making to vegan baking.

natural ways to thick hair

How guar gum thickens your hair:  This mucilaginous ingredient soaks up water till it’s full and thick. Then it forms a flexible transparent layer over your hair, fattening your strands so they stay looking thick for days at a time.

Side benefits: The invisible layer guar creates over your strands protects against breakage. It also helps seal in moisture on thirsty summer strands. This multi-functional ingredient also adds tons of shine and slip.

Where can I get guar gum: Guar is a common ingredient in many conditioners and natural styling gels. In products it’s commonly found as guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, or cationic guar gum, where a positive charge is added to the molecule, helping it adhere better to our negatively-charged hair.

To make your own mixes from scratch, look for food grade guar gum at herbal or health food stores – it’s commonly used as a stabiliser in eggless cooking and baking.

How should I use guar gum: Sprinkle a teaspoon of guar gum over 1 cup of water, while stirring continuously. Cover and leave it to hydrate. Within an hour or so, you should get a thick jelly. Mix with a rich, slippery conditioner and leave on your hair for 15 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with warm-to-hot water to reveal smoother, fuller, thicker strands.

Watch out for: Build up. Natural products can build up just like synthetic ones, so if you plan on making regular use of guar, be sure to use a deep-cleansing shampoo on a regular basis.

Natural Hair Thickener: Coconut Oil

Pressed from the flesh of this supernutrient tropical fruit, coconut oil is not only good for you on the inside, it has many benefits for your hair – including being a great natural thickener.

Natural ways to thicker hair

How coconut oil thickens your hair: How exactly the
almost-instant plumping effect comes about is not known. However, people report fuller feeling hair after treating with coconut oil and its effects on the hair have even been examined in scientific journals.

Side benefits: Coconut oil strengthens the hair by lubricating strands, reducing protein loss, and preventing the hair from contracting as sharply when drying.

Used long term, it can give you thicker hair all around – by preventing the chipping away of the cuticle that happens with wear and tear. That’s in addition to the temporary boost in thickness you can get from one-off use.

Where can I get coconut oil: You can get this almost everywhere, thanks to a recent resurgence in popularity. Try anywhere from big supermarkets to local grocers specialising in Caribbean or Asian food. Coconut oil can also be found in pharmacies, hair stores and health food stores – the latter is the best bet if you want the organic, unrefined variety.

How should I use coconut oil: Studies have shown that coconut oil is highly effective as a pretreatment, left in overnight hours before washing. Check out our guide to using coconut oil as a pretreatment for step-by-step instructions.

Watch out for: Crunchy or oily hair. If your hair does not tend to like oils, you can still get the benefits from coconut oil, but be careful to wash it out completely after it’s done its job to avoid grease or crunch.

How Long Do Natural Thickeners Last?

Typically, the temporary thickening effects will stick around for three days or so. To revive them, simply wash your hair and repeat. Due to coconut oil’s dual thickening effect, expect to see more lasting results once you’ve been pretreating your hair for 3 months or longer.

To turn up the thickening effects, use coconut oil as an overnight pretreatment, then shampoo it out the next day and deep condition with Capilo La Aplanadora Treatment or Capilo Pro b Natural Hair Masque. Rich in moisturising proteins, La Aplanadora Treatment will amplify the coconut plumping effect, keeping your hair feeling thick for even longer, and making your strands super strong.

capilo treatment for thicker hair

As with all mixes, whenever you blend any of these natural thickeners with water or a water-containing product (check the label for “aqua” as some treatments seem oily or buttery but still incorporate water) it’s best to use it immediately.

Why Roller Sets Are Great For Straightening Your Hair

Why Roller Sets Are Great For Straightening Your Hair

Roller sets: Why is it that Dominicans insist on rollersetting hair, when they could just straighten it with a blowdryer?

The lofty place of los rolos in the famed Dominican method of  hair straightening is not without reason.

Roller sets give your straightened hair that extra edge, volume and vitality. Here’s how. . .

Roller sets = Less heat

Using rollers as a step in straightening your hair means your strands spend less time in contact with direct heat, which is the most damaging form of heat for your hair.

metal ROLLERS Dominican hair allianceThe rollers stretch your hair out and smooth it out as it dries under the hood dryer, allowing you to build in straightness before you go toe-to-toe with the blowdryer, and possibly the flat iron.

Blowdrying hair from wet is a no-no in the Dominican tradition. In contrast, when you roller set first, by the time you use the other tools, a lot of the straightening has already happened, meaning you need less direct heat time to achieve your desired look.

Roller sets = More volume

The big curl given by the rollers (for a traditional Dominican Blowout, your stylist will use the biggest size roller your hair can take, in order to maximise stretch), imprints your hair with volume, all the while temporarily smoothing away your natural curl. This tension-based, more 3D method of straightening – as opposed to the flattening effect of the flat iron – conserves and builds in body, leaving your hair as full as it is smooth when done.

Roller sets = More smoothness

roller set dominicanhairallianceGetting the hair to lie tautly stretched over a roller as it dries has a strong smoothing effect that just can’t be replicated with a blowdryer or a flat iron.

Done right, rollersetting is tension-based straightening that takes advantage of your hair’s flexibility when wet, allowing the roller set to mould your hair into straightness – as opposed to nearly melting it and deforming it, which is what direct heat styling tools do.

Just make sure you avoid common rolling mistakes and use the right methods and products to ensure your hair lies smooth on the roller – and the right rollers to maximise the stretch, with minimum impact on your hair.

Roller sets = Hair with movement

white car hair with movement Dominican hair allianceRollers give your hair some serious bounce and flow! The curved shape which the rollers form your hair into comes with its own spring. And not only that: using a roller set beforehand preserves precious moisture, and moisture = movement.

Straightened hair can often suffer from lack of movement when achieved by blowdryer, flat iron or pressing comb alone.

This is largely because the hair loses so much moisture after sustained straightening at higher, direct heat, which has a stiffening effect.

An authentic Dominican stylist will lay your hair in rollers under the dryer before even contemplating the blowdryer. And by the time she unravels the springy roller set, your hair has some serious movement to it, most of which will stay intact during the blowdry phase, as, in the Dominican Blowout – despite the name – this part is kept to a minimum, reducing the stress on your hair.

Roller sets =  Straighter hair

Even if you’re pressing your hair old-school with a hot comb, getting some of the curl out beforehand with the rollers means you can get your hair more straightened before it reaches the point of resistance, which most of us know only too well.

roller sets get you straighter hair Dominican hair allianceAfter a certain amount of time under the blowdryer, flat iron or pressing comb, healthy hair tends to reach a point where it refuses to be straightened any further. Usually, when this happens, you have to hit it up again the next day – meaning more heat, which is not good at all for your tresses.

Rollers are just about the best way to stretch out your cur beforehand, meaning you start the manual straightening process with hair that’s already partway straight.

Stretching your hair beforehand means you get to maximise the impact of the time during which your hair is straightened with direct heat, since you give it a little headstart. It also means you spend less time using these tools in your tresses – a very hair healthy bonus.

Using a combination of methods always gives your straightened hair more mileage. When a Dominicana rollersets your hair, blows it out and then wraps it into el Doobie, your hair gets imprinted with a multilayered straightness, allowing it to stay straight for longer. A Dominican Blowout can last a good 1-2 weeks, especially if you know the right way to stretch your Blowout. A whole lot of that longer-lasting straightness is due to the amazing stretching powers of a roller set.

Quick Growth: How To Grow Your Hair With Iron

Quick Growth: How To Grow Your Hair With Iron

grow your hair with iron

What should you do the next time you hear about a “miracle” product that promises it can speed up hair growth, stop hair loss, make thin hair into thick hair, and turn grey hair back to black?

a) Dismiss it as yet another piece of too-good-to be true hair industry hype

b) call your doctor?

If you’ve noticed your hair falling out, brittle strands that won’t grow or premature greys, then you should probably go for ‘b’. A quick blood test will reveal if you’re suffering from an overlooked, yet all-too-common deficiency that’s often behind these hair problems. If you are, then you might be in luck: that miracle beauty product does actually exist. It’s called iron.

Grow your Hair With Iron:

How iron boosts hair growth

Iron, selenium, vitamin D and folate are all essential for strong healthy hair growth. Image by Bayley Gramling.

As rewarding as the product junkie lifestyle can be, good haircare really does start from within.

The nutrients in your diet make up the structure of your strands – which makes iron like hair magic. Along with other micronutrients like folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and selenium, iron plays a major role in the rapidly dividing matrix cells that lie in the root of your hair.

When your follicles are deficient in these essentials, all sorts of things start going awry: hair turns grey way before its time, strands start falling out, and your hair grows in slower, thinner and more fragile.

When your follicles are deficient in these essentials, all sorts of things start going awry: hair turns grey way before its time, strands start falling out, and your hair grows in slower, thinner and more fragile.

There are tons of studies linking iron deficiency to hair loss, and several which show a relationship between low iron and premature grey hair. Not only can iron deficiency give you low energy, decreased resistance to infection, and poor intellectual performance, it’s bad news for your follicles, too.

Luckily, a lot of this is reversible. Boosting your supply of iron and other key micronutrients won’t only improve your overall health, it can also fight back against premature greys, weak, breaking hair,  hair loss and slow growth.

Grow your Hair With Iron:

So how much iron do you need?

If you’re a girl or woman aged 11–50 years, you need 14.8g of iron in your diet every single day.  To put that into perspective, that’s almost double what the average man needs. Women with anaemia or other conditions may need even more.

Once menstruation starts, women’s iron needs go way, way up, and most don’t get nearly enough to compensate for blood loss during periods, making iron deficiency the most common nutrient deficiency worldwide.

Hair usually takes the first hit for low iron as your blood shifts precious stores away from hair follicles, directing them to vital organs instead. Boosting iron levels so there’s enough to go around can be key to protecting your hair from premature greying or hair loss.

Grow your Hair With Iron:

Will upping your iron intake reverse hair loss every time?

There’s debate on how much iron intake can actually impact hair loss – one study found insufficient evidence to recommend supplementation to hair loss patients. There are also several other health issues which can cause hair loss, from thyroid dysfunction to emotional stress, to environmental pollution.

That said, the amount of evidence indicating a connection between iron and the most common hair growth problems is reason enough to look into this if you haven’t been able to curb your hair loss, thinning or growth with simple beauty hacks.

Grow your Hair With Iron:

Should I take iron supplements to grow my hair?

nick owuor astro nic visuals 1419123 unsplash

Only take iron supplements for hair growth when prescribed by a physician. Image by Nick Owuor.

Not unless your doctor advises you to. Iron supplementation has a number of known side-effects, including severe cramping and stomach upset, so doctors tend to only prescribe them in serious cases of anaemia.

Some clinicians do recommend maintaining a serum ferritin (one measure of blood iron) level of 70 ng/dL as part of treatment for hair loss, which may be achieved through supplementation. However, those study authors do point out that this is not evidence based per se. And if you’re dealing with hair loss but your iron levels are adequate, taking more iron may not help.

As for popular off-the-shelf hair growth vitamins, iron may not be included in all formulas – meaning you’re better off getting as much of your hair-related nutrition from your diet as possible. It’s best to get your daily dose from what you eat; iron from animal sources tends to be more bioavailable and plant sources that contain iron tend to contain vitamins and other minerals that work in synergy with iron.

Since several food sources contain iron, you have literally dozens of options to make up your 14.8 micrograms per day.

Can iron make hair curlier?

As if there were no end to iron’s hair-transforming powers, now it looks like it might be able to curl hair, too. The science is thin on the ground, but stories of iron making people’s hair curlier abound.

Take Lea. At 29, her iron levels had been low for years due to undiagnosed coeliac disease, which can cause serious iron absorption problems. “I always just thought I had naturally straight hair.” she says. “Once I got diagnosed, my doctor put me on iron. All these curls and waves came out of nowhere and my hair is like three times thicker.”

Thinner, more fragile hair can sometimes be attributed to low iron levels, which is one reason why curls might appear once hair gets stronger and healthier. As many curlies will attest, weakened hair and curl loss often go hand in hand. It’s something stylist Amanda, in London, sees regularly. “When I notice a certain type of brittleness, I can tell that this is someone who’s not getting enough iron in their diet.” She says clients’ thin, breaking hair has often improved by including more iron in their diet.

If you’re on a natural hair journey and wondering how to grow your hair consistently – especially if you’re battling breakage you can’t explain or unexpectedly slow growth – doublecheck whether you’re getting enough iron. This overlooked nutrient could be crucial to reaching your hair goals.

A solid regime will solve many hair issues, but if hair isn’t growing out of our scalps right, what we can achieve by a good routine is limited.

After all, even the best hair treatments for growing out your hair work by keeping your strands intact –  getting enough iron from the start will make their job that much easier.

Exclusive Guide To Thicken and Grow Your Hair – Naturally

Exclusive Guide To Thicken and Grow Your Hair – Naturally

Can you really make your hair thicker, naturally?

In Part 1 and Part 2 of this series, we showed you how to thicken and grow your hair by increasing your strand diameter with natural ingredients.

But there’s another aspect to hair thickness which you can also change – naturally. It’s called hair density.

Here are nine 100% natural, science-based ways to increase your hair’s density and growth to get thicker hair for the long-term.

Understanding what makes hair thicker

What’s your idea of “thick hair”?

A head full of lots and lots of individual hairs, or just heavy, coarse strands. Or both?

When most hair scientists talk about hair thickness, they mean thick strands or a large strand diameter.

thicken and grow your hair
Hair thickness can refer to strand diameter or hair density. Image by Caio Cardenas.

But when regular folk talk about hair thickness, there’s another thing they’re referring to, too. The technical term is “hair density”, or how many individual strands you have on your head. When we talk about thinning hair, this is usually what people mean; a change in the number of strands.

At least from a distance, high hair density or large strand diameter usually give the same impression – tons of volume. So it’s not a surprise that the terms are used interchangeably.

Increasing strand diameter vs increasing hair density

If you have neither large strands nor high strand density, you can still play on either one to get thicker-looking hair, naturally.

In our previous articles on making hair thicker, we gave you natural ways to make your hair look thicker instantly. These all temporarily increase  the size of your strands, using ingredients from nature which either swell the hair shaft, or place a coating on it that makes it look thicker.

That’s the way La Aplanadora Treatment thickens hair: it uses tiny fragments of keratin to plug in missing sections on your hair shaft that make it look thinner, and to attract moisture which plumps your strands instantly.

Protein-free atrActiva Keratin Rich Conditioner works similarly, using ceramides to do the plumping and filling instead of keratin.

Because they also strengthen your strands, these conditioners also help prevent your hair thinning out at the ends through wear and tear.

Since we’ve covered how to get fuller strands, this time we’re going to look at natural ways to increase the density of your hair, too. The main difference between our previous strand-thickening methods and increasing hair density is that hair density takes time.

You’re actually helping and waiting for hair to grow out from your scalp, so it won’t give you instant results like applying  bentonite clay to your existing strands. But the good news is it lasts longer, too.

And if you’re looking to speed up hair growth, to get longer hair faster, the same processes that help increase hair density will help too, because they’re all about enhancing growth.

The same methods that increase strand density also boost hair growth. Image by Caio Cardenas.

We’ve combed through the scientific literature and found 9 ways to get thicker hair with some very convincing evidence to back them up. Will all of them work for everyone? No – no hair growth solution does.
But hopefully one of them will work for you if you’ve been struggling to get your hair’s thickness back, or just feel like your hair has never hit its natural fullness potential..

Your diet could be making your hair thin

Hair thickness is affected by multiple factors, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t touch on the biggest one first. It’s pretty much impossible to overstate the importance of nutrition when it comes to hair health. What you eat and drink affects both the quality and the quantity of hair you have.
anh nguyen 1256888 unsplash healthy food small orig
A healthy diet provides the necessary nutrients for thick, healthy hair. Image by Anh Nguyen.
The hair follicle is an area of high biosynthetic activity: it’s basically a hair factory that runs day and night. If that factory doesn’t get the right raw materials, or enough of them, it’s not going to be able to produce the hair expected.

That’s why deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, proteins and overall caloric intake have all already been linked to hair loss or structural abnormalities in the hair shaft.

Do supplements increase your hair’s thickness?

If you’re low on essential nutrients and are experiencing thinning hair, then increasing intake through your diet or supplements seems like a pretty obvious route. But what about if your hair is thin, but your diet is fine?”

Unless the hair is impaired due to nutritional deficiency, there is only so much that nutrients can do to increase the size of individual hairs because hair thickness is largely genetic, ” states Dr Trüeb, a dermatologist based at Center for Dermatology and Hair Diseases, Zürich, Switzerland.

But Dr Trüeb adds a caveat: since external factors can influence hair health, increasing your intake of micronutrients might still be able to help your hair if the lack of thickness is due to a hair disorder.

Thicken and Grow Your Hair:

The 9 Natural Hair Thickeners (and Growth Boosters!)

Our first three natural hair thickeners are all micronutrients you should look into if your hair is thinning and you want it thicker. If you’re low on any of them, this could be just what it takes to give you thick hair.

Always remember, it’s a good idea to get the OK from your doctor before you begin any supplementation programme.

Vitamin E

michele blackwell przzdqzzkpk unsplash orig

Taking Vitamin E internally or topically boosts hair growth and thickness. Image by Michele Blackwell.

Celebrated for its antioxidant power, we’re used to seeing this vitamin in almost every skincare product, but did you know it could give you thicker hair, too? Well, vitamin E can do exactly that – whether taken internally or massaged into the scalp.
In one study, vitamin E rubbed into the skin actually triggered the development of hair follicles where there were none, and sent those hairs right into growth mode.

In another study, this time with the vitamin E taken internally, the numbers of hairs on the scalp increased by an amazing 34.5% percent after 8 months. This has to be one of the most intense volume boosters around – and it’s completely natural.

Iron

If you’re a woman experiencing hair thinning, and are unsure about your iron intake, having your blood iron levels checked is a good place to start. Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in the world and women and girls are the most affected.

Having low iron doesn’t always mean obvious symptoms, but it is frequently linked to a host of hair problems such as thin hair, slow hair growth and hair loss.

attractive beautiful close up 1115697 by min an small

Iron deficiency often affects hair growth and thickness. Image by Min An.

Zinc

When your zinc levels run too low, both your hair density and your strand structure can be affected. One of the telltale signs of zinc deficiency is rough, brittle, inexplicably dry hair. Another is lower hair density. Inadequate zinc has been linked to common hair disorders that cause thinning, like alopecia areata, androgenic alopecia and telogen effluvium.

Luckily, getting your zinc intake up to the right levels doesn’t take long and the results for your hair can come pretty quickly, too. In one study, taking oral zinc supplements brought complete regrowth in 60% of patients with alopecia areata in just 3 months.

Jujube

Ever heard of this fruit? Zizyphus Jujuba, more commonly known as jujube, is an edible bush and fruit that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for generations. Recently, it’s been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and even anti-insomnia powers.

The reason we love it, is because it’s really good for making your hair look thicker, too. A 1% concentration of the essential oil, used directly on the skin, was shown to increase both growth and strand thickness.

Pumpkin Seed Oil

Get this: eating pumpkin seed oil might be able to increase the number of hairs on your head  by 40%. This is what it did for a group of men with androgenetic alopecia at the top of their heads. The men took 400mg of pumpkin seed oil – two capsules before breakfast and two more before dinner – every day for 24 weeks.
markus spiske i2qls 51dgu unsplash small

These early results look really good but the method still needs to be tested out to see if it helps thinning from other hair loss conditions.

Oh, and the pumpkin seed oil supplement used in the study also included other plant extracts (which could have had some impact on the results), so maybe pumpkin seed oil shouldn’t get all the credit just yet.

Green Tea

By now you’ve probably seen some anecdotal evidence on the efficacy of this stuff as a hair rinse for hair shedding or thinning. But the hard science on growing thicker hair with green tea comes courtesy of 30 female mice who had developed spontaneous hair loss.
phuong nguyen dgw9b48prb4 unsplash orig

Green tea can boost hair growth by stimulating inactive follicles. Image by Phuong Nguyen.

After dried green tea extract was added to their drinking water over six months, one third of the mice had significant hair regrowth. The increased thickness came from regrowing hair from inactive follicles, which the green tea seems to stimulate back into action.

Standardised Scalp Massage

Scalp massage has long been linked to boosting hair growth and thickness, but the results from this specific type of scalp massage are really impressive. Standardised Scalp Massage (SSM) is a massage process which involves a series of scalp pinches, presses and stretches and can be done with a scalp massager or by hand.

In one study, just 4 minutes of massage per day over 24 weeks (using a special massage device) was enough to increase hair thickness.

Standardised Scalp Massage is so powerful it has even been shown to stop active hair loss and increase growth on people suffering from androgenic alopecia. In that study, a more intense 20- minute, twice-daily, by hand massage technique was used.

head massage 3530560 1920 image by gundula vogel from
Standardised Scalp Massage thickens hair, boosts growth and stops hair loss. Image by Gundula Vogel.
Now here’s the coolest thing: we’ve all heard by now that, certain health conditions aside, your hair’s natural thickness is determined by your genes. Well, that’s still true. But scientists found that the stretching forces produced by Standardised Scalp Massage actually changed the gene expression of skin cells.
Genes related to the hair cycle got more active, while hair-loss related genes were down-regulated. Which just goes to show that not everything that is genetically determined is genetically fixed, too.

Another cool thing about Standardised Scalp Massage is that it also worked on people who were not experiencing hair loss or thinning. These people were able to increase their natural thickness even further by using the massage techniques. This really offers hope for anyone who has always wanted to boost their naturally thin or fine hair, but saw no changes from good diet or haircare.

Marine Proteins

Inspired by the beautifully healthy skin and hair of the Inuit – whose traditional diet is heavily fish and protein-based – marine proteins are a popular natural hair growth enhancer and thickener.

Marine proteins can increase hair root cells, thicken strands, and reduce shedding. Image by Croisy.

Made from mollusk and shark derivatives, marine peptide complexes are supposed to work by increasing hair root cells and enhancing conditions for anagen – the growth phase of your hair cycle.

Several studies have shown how a supplement made up of marine proteins, lipids and other marine extracts can increase hair strand diameter, promote growth and reduce hair loss and shedding – all of which contribute to thicker, fuller-looking hair.

Onion juice

We’ve saved the best for last: Onion juice – that same stuff that burns your eye when you’re slicing them up for dinner – can thicken your hair. It works by kickstarting inactive follicles into growth, which increases your hair density.

When it was used in a study to treat people with alopecia areata, a good 87% of patients treated with onion juice saw full hair regrowth.  To use this method at home, just apply fresh onion juice to your scalp twice a day, for two months.

Study subjects saw the first signs of results from as early as two weeks into the regimen. So if you can stand the strong sulphurous smell – and everyone around you can too – this is could be the ideal hair thickening method for a quick win.
